tweet, tweet!

November 24, 2009

According to a recent editorial in The Chronicle of Philanthropy, more and more nonprofits are using Twitter in hopes of expanding their reach. Sean Stannard-Stockton, the editorial’s author, argues:

…the people and organizations that can figure out how to speak authentically about philanthropy to a mainstream voice–without dumbing down the subject or talking over the heads of the newly formed crowds–will dominate the discussions about the nonprofit world in the coming months and years.

Bystander Behavior

November 21, 2009

We have been hearing quite a bit lately about the difference between bystander behavior and intervention. The Fall 2009 Perspectives magazine has a thought-provoking article about just this phenomenon.

As Mike Dilbeck, the article’s author, writes:

Fraternity/sorority members are of some of the brightest and best students around. They are capable. They are smart. They have solid values. They are committed to making a difference. Why, then, don’t they stand up for what’s “right” and actually intervene in situations involving hazing, drug/alcohol abuse, eating disorders, offensive remarks, discrimination (racism, homophobia, sexism, anti-Semitism, etc.), sexual abuse/assault, cheating and all other unhealthy and inappropriate behaviors? Why aren’t they handling these problems on their own?

Read the article and let me know what you think!
